Leesburg, Virginia, February 13, 2014 – Image Matters played a leading role in the development of the new GeoPackage Encoding Standard that was adopted by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) on February 13, 2014 (OGC Press Release). GeoPackage makes it much easier to exchange and share geospatial information across different devices, applications and web services throughout the mobile world. Image Matters staff made significant contributions to GeoPackage development and adoption, serving in key roles under the direction of Kevin Backe of the U.S. Army Geospatial Center. Image Matters’ Paul Daisey was the lead engineer on the task, producing the initial specification, serving as the editor, and facilitating community involvement and refinement of the specification, which included working with U.S. Army, FOSS4G, National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, DARPA, OGC and others. Image Matters’ Jeff Yutzler, Randy Gladish (CTO) and Dr. Kirk Jensen, also supported the effort. Jeff Yutzler and Randy Gladish reviewed and commented on draft versions of the specification and provided expert technical advice. Dr. Jensen implemented an initial GeoPackage prototype on an Android tablet. GeoPackage was taken from conception to adoption, including multiple commercial and open source implementations, in a record-setting 18 months.
According to Image Matters CEO, Harry Niedzwiadek, “We’ve all faced those times in the field with our mobile phones and tablets when we lose our network connection and our phone applications stop functioning. Most mobile users in mission-critical roles simply can’t afford to have this happen to them. GeoPackage addresses this by allowing users to have their critical geospatial applications onboard, so that when they lose connection they can still operate.”
