Release GeoSpatial ontology through OGC

OGC Web Services (OWS-10) Provides Key Building Block to Enhance Geospatial Interoperability

Leesburg, Virginia, October, 2014

Image Matters announces the release of its comprehensive Geospatial-Semantic Ontologies, which have been formulated, tested and refined over the past decade. These ontologies have been developed over the course of many internal and joint research and development projects. They have been donated to OGC with the goal of providing a well-designed and proven ontological foundation for the Semantic-Geospatial Web, which in turn will enable robust geospatial semantic interoperability between different systems and domains of interest. Image Matters introduced this seminal work to the OGC community through its participation in OGC’s Interoperability Program, under the OGC Web Services (OWS-10) initiative http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/initiatives/ows-10.

During the OWS-10 effort, Image Matters refined and documented its modular set of core and cross-domain geospatial ontologies, defined in OWL (includes mereo-topology, spatial relations, locations, temporal ontologies, geometries, and events). These ontologies leverage existing standards (ISO 19xxx and GeoSPARQL), but have been modularized and adapted to better leverage the expressiveness of OWL and favor reusability and extensibility. “Our contribution positions OGC to provide a key building block for the next generation Semantic-Geospatial Web. These ontologies will bootstrap and drive geospatial-semantic interoperability on a widespread scale,” says Stephane Fellah, Chief Knowledge Scientist at Image Matters. Harry Niedzwiadek, CEO at Image Matters states, “OGC represents a key catalyzing force in the marketplace for geospatial interoperability. As a company that is convicted to this same cause, this contribution is the right thing to do.”

About OGC

The OGC® is an international consortium of more than 475 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards
support interoperable solutions that “geo-enable” the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. Visit OGC’s website at: http://www.opengeospatial.org.
