metaSmarts™

metaSmarts is a suite of standards-compliant desktop and server software components for implementing and managing the metadata lifecycle. metaSmarts is specialized for geospatial metadata management. All components are 100% Java, easy to use, easy to install and run in networked operating environments, including Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Citrix MetaFrame.

Benefits

  • Enhances data management, project management, and community data sharing.
  • Preserve data history so that it can be shared, re-used, or adapted.
  • Promotes data accountability and limits data liability by explicitly designating the effective and administrative limits of use of the data.
  • Enables independent assessment of suitability by stakeholders with different or multiple uses for the data.
  • Standards-compliant for enhanced interoperability; can easily extend to new geospatial data sources as they become available through web service APIs defined by Open Geospatial Consortium.

Features

  • Tools to describe, search, discover, access, appropriately use, and share data.
  • Metadata Manager – Used at the beginning of the metadata lifecycle to convert, correct, validate and edit metadata records in an automated workflow. Automatically performs the convert-correct-validate process the same way, whether there's one record or thousands of records.
  • Metadata Editor – Used in the create, edit and validate stages of the metadata lifecycle. Supports customized metadata templates for rapid, project or organization-specific creation of metadata documents.
  • Catalog Manager – Used to validate, publish, discover and access activities of the metadata lifecycle. From a single desktop, catalog administrators and metadata practitioners can securely manage the metadata holdings at one or dozens of catalog server nodes.
  • Catalog Service – An OGC-compliant online metadata catalog service that implements the FGDC Application Profile, provisioning the discover and access activities of the metadata lifecycle; the online repository for storage and indexing of metadata records.
  • Java Z39.50 Adapter for Catalog Service – supports the Z39.50 GEO protocol, a protocol used by participants in the FGDC NSDI Clearinghouse for discovery of distributed datasets.
